The Fairfax Camping October Meetup

Oct 22

Location
This location is shown only to members
Estimated attendance
 2  people attended.

Who organized?
Susan

Due to scheduling conflicts, I am rescheduling this meeting for Thursday, September 3rd at 7:30 PM.
We definitely need to have a meeting before our trip to Assateague September 11-13, so I hope everyone can make it.

We will be continuing to meet at our new location this month at the Ruby Tuesday located slightly behind Borders on James Swat Court in Fairfax Court Shopping Center. We'll grab a table near the bar, but ask the hostess for "Susan". This venue is working well for us! We will be discussing the details for coming trips. Hope to see you there!

Hey Mark sorry, I had planned on attending but fighting this cold. Im not sure if its allergies and I didnt want anyone else to get it, if it wasnt allergies. re: sleeping pad, yep I upgraded to a REI 3"sleeping pad and a thermarest foam pad. used them both 2 weekends ago, it was great. Im done with air mattresses. NO MORE. I may upgrade my 40 degree sleeping pad to a sleeping bag liner or upgrade to 10+ sleeping pad. anyone have any comments about the sleeping bag liner? mike

Perhaps I assumed wrong - I was there, but didn't see anyone else.

I assume that, contrary to the description above, the October meeting has not been rescheduled for September 3rd. :-) See you tomorrow.

Mike, for cold weather camping, I've found that a good ground pad (or an air mattress) is the most important thing, as the ground will suck heat out of you much faster than the air. I've also found that adding a blanket or three on top of, or around, an underrated sleeping bag works pretty well, any you don't need to buy anything. Use larger blankets (queen, king) if you have them as you can wrap them around or tuck them under so they don't slide off in the night. Also, wear warm socks.

question for the early spring/late fall campers? I'm concerned that my only sleeping bag may not be warm enough either for any fall hiking events, or early spring events next year. the sleeping bag is 10+ years old, in very good condition, no snags or tears but is rated at 40+ plus. <walmart cheapie> should I keep a 10+ or go to 0 mummy bag or go with a sleeping bag liner? Ive not used a mummy bag before, but I would prefer to be warm and snug, then cold and flappy.. thoughts? thanks mike
